A rustic grist mill waterfall and scenic horseback riding trails help make Babcock State Park a perfect spot to enjoy West Virginia's beauty and adventure.

West Virginia State Parks are as varied as the terrain and economy of the Mountain State. One common denominator, however, is the natural beauty found in each of the locations.

Babcock State Park lacks some of the upscale amenities of the larger state resorts. It does, however, provide guests with the same opportunity to enjoy nature while hiking, fishing, horseback riding or just relaxing. Its 4127 acres are located adjacent to the New River Gorge National River.

History of Glade Creek Grist Mill at Babcock State Park

The most recognizable landmark at Babcock is the Glade Creek Grist Mill. The mill was assembled by combining pieces of three existing mills scattered around the Mountain State. The present mill was completed in 1976.

The basic structure of the mill dates back to the1890 Stoney Creek Grist Mill which was dismantled and moved to Babcock. Other parts came from the Spring Run Grist Mill near Petersburg and the Onego Grist Mill near Seneca Rock.

The Glade Creek Grist Mill is a working mill and park visitors can purchase freshly-ground cornmeal and buckwheat flour.

Horseback Riding Through West Virginia Mountain Trails

Horseback riding and pony rides for children can be scheduled through the Babcock Stables. Trails wind through terrain that is both scenic and rugged and sights range from wildflowers to wildlife. Under the canopy of trees riders regularly see wild turkey and deer and other wildlife is sometimes spotted.

Guided trail ride options range from hourly to half day and an evening ride is also available. The half day ride winds to a scenic overlook.

Cabins and Campsites at Fayette County West Virginia State Park

The 52-unit campground has both tent and trailer campsites, picnic tables, grills and a bathhouse with hot showers and laundry facilities. Some can be reserved and some are rented on a first come, first served basis. The campground is open seasonally.

Thirteen log cabins are located along the trout steam on Glade Creek and are available from spring to fall, weather permitting.

Family-Oriented Recreation Available at Mountain State Park

Seasonal activities include a swimming pool, paddleboats, canoe and rowboat rentals, fishing, a basketball court, tennis and volleyball courts, and horseshoe pit.

The park, with its 20 miles of hiking trails, is located in Fayette County in south central West Virginia. There is no restaurant at Babcock, but picnic shelters are available for groups at a nominal fee. Many amenities are operated from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Visitors should check with the park for specific operating times.
